A video that went viral on social media shows a teenage girl using a sink plunger to steal items from inside a car, in broad daylight.
The footage shows the young woman using the tool to pull down the car window and access the interior without damaging it. The incident caught attention for the speed and discretion of the act, and it also exposed the vulnerability of some cars, especially older models.
According to federal officer Fábio Henriques, the technique can work on cars with manual and poorly fitted windows, since the plunger’s suction allows the glass to be pushed down without breaking it. In vehicles with electric windows, the method is less effective, as the motor usually locks the window. Still, the act demonstrates how minor oversights or maintenance failures can make cars easy targets for silent and effective thefts.
To prevent this type of crime, Henriques recommends simple measures: don’t leave visible objects inside the car, park in busy and well-lit areas, keep windows and window tracks in good condition, and ensure the alarm is working. The use of security films can also help make it harder to access the inside of the vehicle.
